Extended Gates at Port of Montreal Increase Fluidity 2018-10-10

Dear Valued Customer,

CargoM held a meeting October 4 to discuss the trucking pilot project at the Port of Montreal that took place earlier this year over a period of six weeks, from May 14 to June 22.

The comparative analysis examined activity at four terminals: Cast, Maisonneuve, Racine and Viau.

The number of trucks was recorded upon entry into the terminals, with the turnaround times measured from entry into the port until exit from the port.

In total, there were 55,529 trucks with 5,015 entering during the 6:00 a.m. window and 8,466 after 3:00 p.m. Container truck volume rose 13.5% in 2018 over 2017.

The level of truck traffic after 3:00 p.m. was 15.2% for the port as a whole. Viau (16.3%) and Racine (16.2%) were the terminals with the highest level of traffic after 3:00 p.m.

The post-3:00 p.m. period had a total average turnaround time of 53 minutes.

There was a 15-minute reduction in total turnaround time in the 6:00 a.m. window and an average of 26 minutes’ reduction in turnaround time after 3:00 p.m.

Conclusions around the pilot project were as follows.

The extended gates showed positive results, as explained by four key factors:
  1. A 13.5% rise in truck volumes at the port.
  2. A 15-minute reduction in total turnaround time in the 6:00 a.m. window and an average of 26 minutes’ reduction in turnaround time after 3:00 p.m.
  3. Increased productivity, with 6,600 more trucks being handled at one minute less per truck compared with the same period in 2017.
  4. The extended gates are in line with truckers’ habits and encourage more fluid traffic (avoiding the a.m. and p.m. rush).
