Client Advisory - GCT’s Final Phase of On Dock Project at Vancouver Deltaport Going Live: Planning for Operational Impacts 2018-09-27

CIFFA recently issued the following bulletin to its members.

“GCT Canada is going live with the $300 million GCT Deltaport Intermodal Yard Reconfiguration Project to deliver project benefits to our customers and rail partners as soon as possible. The transition to the new, semi-automated mode of operation will commence on September 24, 2018.

This state-of-the-art project represents the first of its kind worldwide and will ensure that GCT Deltaport is equipped to handle surge volumes from the largest ships calling the trade going forward. In spite of the exhaustive testing, workforce training, system trials, and contingency planning already in place, activating a project of this magnitude and complexity will lead to operational disruption to our daily outbound rail and vessel berthing schedules during transition to full operations.

Planning in advance of and throughout the peak season, GCT has worked closely with railway partners to ready operations and minimize expected impacts to customers’ cargo velocity. With collaboration from CN and CP Rail, GCT has activated a series of ongoing initiatives that include trucking to local rail ramps to reduce dwell time, leveraging all five GCT berths at GCT Vanterm and GCT Deltaport to maximize peak season throughput, and identifying and expediting cargo to key destinations.

Activating this project will ensure that the full benefits of additional capacity and quick cargo turn time is delivered to customers as soon as possible. GCT will continue to communicate with stakeholders and ensure expeditious handling of cargo through GCT’s Operations and Customers Solutions teams.

Once the full implementation is complete, GCT Deltaport will become the first semi-automated rail yard in the world: a significant tool to ensure the continued growth and success for our ocean carrier, freight forwarder, and beneficial cargo owning customers.

GCT thanks all of our supply chain partners and stakeholders for their support, patience and understanding.”

CN Rail has shared its plans “to protect terminal and network inland fluidity, and balance adjusted footage expectations with its steamship line customers. The complexities behind a project launch of this magnitude will require a ramping up period, thus resulting in operational disruptions to daily train delivery, limited outbound production plans, and potential impact to dwell time on import loads over the course of the next 4- 6 weeks. CN will continue to monitor the situation closely and will be re-evaluating capacity daily based on port performance and production.”
