Port of Prince Rupert Letter Supports Call for Renewed Focus on Gateway Strategies 2018-03-21

Following the launch last week of CIFFA’s letter campaign calling on the Government of Canada to act on intermodal transportation problems, the association has received tremendous response via its shared template (available in both English and French), and thanks all participants for their contributions.

The Port of Prince Rupert, addressed in the initial letter from CIFFA, was the first to write to CIFFA to recognize the concerns of the association, its members and other intermodal shippers using the Prince Rupert Gateway. In a letter to CIFFA and the federal government dated March 15, the port cited atypical service challenges during the winter.

Its Fairview Terminal performance was impacted by record volumes and difficult winter operating challenges further inland.

The Port of Prince Rupert reports improved terminal performance and dwell times, and said it expects full recovery with return to normal operating conditions by the end of March.

An additional 500,000 TEUs of terminal capacity was added in Q3 2017. This is expected to enhance the terminal’s ability to more quickly recover from disruptions in the future.

The full letter from the Port of Prince Rupert is available here.
