Truckers Band Together on Wait Time Charges in Montreal 2018-03-01

Last week, CIFFA reported that several of its Montreal-based members had brought concerns to the association about container cartage issues at the Port of Montreal.
Wait time, congestion and terminal dwell have been an ongoing issue this winter at the port, these members reported.
For the last few months, but most severely in the last few weeks, CIFFA has been hearing from members and from trucking companies about “above-average delays at all terminals on the Island of Montreal.”
This week, CIFFA was approached by the media about the trucking situation. To the association’s knowledge, there is word that several trucking firms met together last Friday in Montreal to decide on the action of imposing wait fees, some of which were quoted at $75/hour for any waits longer than 90 minutes.
The Port of Montreal extended some of its weekday gate hours both last week and this week. But if truckers start applying additional surcharges for wait times and, in some cited cases, for drops, some forwarders have indicated they have little choice but to recover costs by adding on to drayage charges. CIFFA has requested an update and statement from the Port of Montreal and will keep members apprised of any new information, as well as any media reports on the issue.
