U.S. Imposes Safeguard Tariffs on Imported Large Residential Washing Machines and Imported Solar Cells and Modules 2018-01-31

On January 22, 2018, pursuant to Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974, U.S. President Donald Trump approved “safeguard tariffs” on imported residential washing machines as well as solar cells and modules.

Per the Federal Register notices (see links below), these safeguard tariffs shall be effective on importations of the subject goods made on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern standard time on February 7, 2018.

These Section 201 relief tariffs may be appealed to the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, such an appeal to the WTO may only be brought by a sovereign nation(s). During the pendency of a WTO appeal, it is likely that the safeguard reliefs just ordered by the United States will remain in place. If no appeal is made, these tariffs are likely to remain in effect for the proposed number of years: 4 years for Solar Cells and 3 years for Washing Machines.
