CBSA Trade Compliance Verifications - January 2018 2018-01-31

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has published its target list of verification (audit) priorities for the first part of 2018.

Some of these priorities are continued from previous years. A few new items have been added.

Amongst those added is the tariff classification of bags classified in heading 42.02. Customs is concerned about bags that may be subject to 11% duty but are being classified under a tariff item that bears a lower rate of duty.

The following products have also been added:
  • Mineral water and aerated waters
  • Gloves (plastic, leather)
  • Pebbles, limestone and granules
  • Spent fowl
  • Safety headgear
Customs will continue in 2018 to verify the value for duty of imported apparel and the origin (NAFTA entitlement) of t-shirts.

A complete list of the 2018 CBSA Verification Priorities can be found here.

If your company imports any of these products, please contact your Milgram representative. Your company may be targeted for a compliance verification audit. If you do receive a phone call or a notification letter from Canada Customs, we recommend that you immediately contact your Milgram account representative or Candy McRae, the Manager of Milgram’s Rulings & Tariff Department.
