Seasonal Shipping Woes Precede Potentially Rough Peak Before and After Lunar New Year 2018-01-16

Several steamship lines have notified Milgram about port congestion issues that are plaguing major gateway cities in Asia including Pusan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Ningbo, HoChiMinh City and others. There are schedule disruptions for some vessels that amount to seven days or more on some rotations.

Winter weather has been especially unkind to the two Canadian rail carriers (CN and CP). Treacherous conditions in the rail corridor through the mountains on the West Coast and then limitations on volume that were brought about by the terribly cold weather that was experienced here over the past few weeks have combined to create a serious reduction in rail capacity.

Ships continue to discharge regularly on the West Coast and with respect to Vancouver in particular, dwell time for rail has increased to the point that the carriers are advising an average delay of seven days before containers can start to move inland.

To summarize, on both sides of the Pacific carriers are running into serious problems in what should be a traditionally quiet period that comes before the onset of Lunar New Year that is celebrated throughout Southeast Asia (and that is before the surge or mini-peak that precedes and then runs through the holiday period celebrated in China and elsewhere) coming up on February .

It is important that clients budget accordingly and anticipate lengthier delivery times that they would normally be accustomed to at this time of year.

When shipments are delayed, as a rule Milgram informs any affected clients and we endeavor to keep them informed throughout the transit of an individual shipment whether that is positive or not.

Please contact your Milgram Client Services Representative for the status of any particular consignment.
