The Future of the Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) Program and 2018 Version Release 2017-11-01

Today Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA, the Agency) published Customs Notice 17-34 on the subject of the annual update to the Canadian Automated Electronic Declaration (electronic cargo export declaration) software and the future of that program. Highlights include:
  • Reiteration by the Agency of the importance for exporters to comply with Canadian Export Reporting statutes and regulations
  • Requirement for exporters to download, install and deploy the CAED 2018 software update by January 31, 2018 at the latest
  • The elimination of certain designated export offices (applicable to the place of exit field in CAED or Box # 13 on a B-13A) and a change to one other office
  • Advice that the 2018 CAED update will be the last of its kind as CAED is being phased out by the Government of Canada
  • The replacement for CAED (called the Canadian Export Reporting System or CERS for short) will be phased in by January 2020
The Customs Notice (including all of the detail mentioned above and then some) is available in its entirety from the CBSA website.

The notice is suggested reading for any individual or organization that is engaged in export-related activity, an essential component of which is Government reporting.
