Cargo Handlers on Strike at Toronto Pearson 2017-07-28

Further to Milgram’s bulletin to clients dated July 27th, hundreds of cargo and baggage handlers at Pearson International Airport are now on strike after rejecting the latest offer from their employer. Teamsters Local 419 officially walked off the job just after 10 pm last night, after about 95 percent of the membership voted to reject the contract offer.

The workers, who include 700 baggage and cargo handlers and cabin cleaners, are all employees of Swissport. The company is contracted to service 30 of the 74 airlines at Pearson.
Members should expect to be impacted. There will, in all likelihood, be picket lines at entrances to the Vista Building, which typically will hold trucks for a period of time and delay them from entering or departing. Shippers should be advised to prepare for delays, and forwarders might add extra time to normal cut-offs to ensure that export cargo can be delivered within required carrier cut-offs.
Some Asian carriers seem to be reacting strongly, with some announcing that they are refusing to fly cargo to YYZ. Check with carriers to ascertain if they expect cargo to be impacted, if bookings are being honoured and so on.
