Lockout at the Port of Montreal Continues
2010-07-23
The lockout at the Port of Montreal continues with labour talks scheduled for today. CN and CP have both advised that they are no longer accepting any containers bound for the Port of Montreal until further notice.
European Imports
Some vessels are at anchor at the Port of Montreal awaiting further instructions while others have already been diverted to other ports such as Halifax. Ocean carriers are terminating the move at the new port of discharge and the consignee must arrange their own transportation to the final destination. All additional charges due to trucking, diversion or storage will also be for the account of the consignee. Milgram can provide truck or rail services from the Port of Halifax if required.
Export Shipments
Export cargo is being diverted to Halifax or Newark and may experience delays due to rail car shortages. Cargo already on terminal property is not being handled and cannot be diverted. Some vessels may return empty to destination causing future backlogs.
Indian Sub-Continent Imports destined for Halifax
As more ships are diverted to Halifax this will likely cause a backlog for cargo originally destined to the Port of Halifax. CN's ability to handle the increased volumes will also be tested as they are already experiencing a shortage of railcars. CN is the only rail company servicing Halifax. If congestion worsens at the Port of Halifax, clients may want to consider trucking their cargo instead of using rail. Please contact your client service representative and ensure truck service is requested within 72 hours of vessel discharge.
Far-East Imports
Until now, the impact on shipments from the far-east is minimal to none.
Milgram will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as it unfolds. Please do not hesitate to contact your client services representative if you require further information.
