New Washouts Impact Toronto / Montreal Rail Terminals 2010-06-30

CN has provided the following update on the washout in Northern Ontario that is contributing to ever increasing delays at terminals in Toronto and Montreal. CN shares the following:
“CN has experienced a washout on the Redditt Subdivision in Northern Ontario on the morning of June 27th.  CN personnel were immediately dispatched to this location and the line was reopened late on the evening of the 28th. This has caused a delay to Montreal and Toronto inbound trains, and may impact import traffic by 24 hours. This has also caused some car supply issues in Toronto and Montreal that may impact the loading of some International cargo. CN Intermodal will be protecting loaded export traffic and domestic loads first. CN will continue to load empty containers back to Port locations but CN is still experiencing a backlog to certain key destinations as demand continues to be strong.

As a result of the continuing strong Import and Export demand, CN car resources continue to be tight. CN is doing all they can to identify and protect customer key requirements, but late trains and continuing bad orders are impacting loading activities at some terminals. CN has had exports left behind to key Eastern ports in the last number of days. This has been due to a combination of factors:  high ground inventory at key terminals, late inbound car supply and bad order cars that are impacting daily load plans. CN is trying to minimize the impact. CN apologizes for any failures that have been experienced in recent days, and hope to be back to a fluid operating condition as soon as possible. With the continued increase in Import volumes that will be received at CN Intermodal terminals and with the upcoming July 1st holiday, CN asks that all their customers pickup Import containers as quickly as possible.”

The situation is bad and CN knows it, but the solution is not yet in sight.  CIFFA Members should note that heavy delays are occurring at the BIT terminal. An increase in traffic has caused a shortage of equipment and manpower. Delays are also happening during off peak hours. One CIFFA Member shares the following:

“Currently (Tuesday), we have trucks lined up outside of the terminal east on Intermodal Drive and south on Goreway Drive to the 407. This past weekend, we had trucks at BIT for a minimum of 3 hours. After 1300 hrs on Sunday, the machines were only unloading the trains which directly lead to further delays. We tried and are trying to get Reservations to clear the terminal as quickly as possible but are unable to secure a gate appointment. Unfortunately it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide clients with delivery schedules. The situation is in need of an immediate fix.”

Meantime the situation is not much better at CP Vaughan Terminal. With no reservations system, drayage firms aren’t spending hours trying to obtain slots as they do with CN. (Only to miss the window because they are stuck outside the Terminal for hours, unable to get in). However, with no reservations system at CP Terminals trucks just line up and hope. With train diversions due to the Alberta/ Saskatchewan washouts, CP is experiencing trouble updating their tracking systems.  Congestion is heavy and confusion abounds at CP terminals.
